FG may consider 2 campuses for Ekiti varsity by Clement Idoko

THE Federal Government may have yielded to the agitation of the people of Ekiti State over the location of the new university it created for the state by considering two campuses for the institution.

The federal university, which is among the nine new universities created by President Goodluck Jonathan, with a proposed take-off date of September 2011, has been operating from Abuja because of the controversy over where it will be sited.

Nigerian Tribune gathered in Abuja that in order to placate the indigenes of Ikole-Ekiti, government would allow the new university to run some programmes at Ikole-Ekiti, while Oye-Ekiti would remain the main campus of the university.

According to a credible source, this proposal would be presented to President Jonathan, who is the Visitor to the university, to give approval on the number of colleges or programmes to be located at the Ikole-Ekiti campus.

The decision of the Federal Government to wade into the crisis over location of the university in the state is borne out of the desire to ensure that a good number of the new universities kick off officially by September as promised by President Jonathan since last year.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) had to allocate an office space to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Chinedu Nebo to commence work, pending when the issues bothering on the site of the university were resolved.

Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie who spoke while handing over the office space as temporary office for the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti then, pointed out that “Oye Ekiti has all it takes to host the university”.

The governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, had, in his recent visit on the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, told newsmen that the state government and Federal Government were working out the contentious issues surrounding the location of the University.

The Governor had then promised that nothing would stop the take-off of the university as proposed.

However, it was reliably gathered that two or three colleges might be allowed to run from Ikole-Ekiti while Oye-Ekiti will be the main campus of the university.

Conduct post-UTME for Ekiti federal varsity, NUC, others told

THE National Secretary, Oye Progressive Union, Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State, Mr Oluwaseun Owolabi, has urged the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Ministry of Education and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Bord (JAMB) to conduct the post-Unified Matriculation Examination for the Federal University, Oye Ekiti.

Mr Owolabi said this while addressing journalists at Oye Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of the state, recently, adding that the host community had enough and viable infrastructure for the immediate take-off of the institution.

He said that Oye community had renovated some blocks of classrooms and administrative buildings with viable logistics to host principal officers, saying that adequate provision had been made for student hostels.

He said that some students and parents had been visiting the temporary site of the university for information on admission processes, adding that “some letters addressed to the registrar and the vice chancellor of the university are received in Oye Ekiti.”

While commending President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration for the establishment of the university in the area, he said that the university  would bring a lot of development to the state and empower the youth meaningfully.

Owolabi, therefore, urged Nigerians to rally round President Jonathan so as to take the country to a greater height while also urging the people to support Governor Kayode Fayemi, so as to be able to develop the state to an enviable standard.

29,000 applicants jostle for UI admission UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN UPDATES

THE authorities of the University of Ibadan (UI) have invited 29,000 candidates, out of which only 5,000 will be admitted, for his post-Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) test slated for today.

The candidates, the Nigerian Tribune learnt, chose the premier university as their first choice.

In order to check fraudulent practices, the university said it had designed another questioning pattern, which would subject all the applicants to a written test, as against the previous interactive session.

Sources disclosed that the school authorities had decided to change its former interactive session to written examinations, in order to ensure objectivity and reduce the human factor tendency which could tarnish the image of the institution.

Under the new arrangement, candidates were expected to write their examination using a computer-aided answer sheets.

The questions had also been customised to ensure that they were specifically designed for each candidate.
