JAMB has failed – FUTA Convocation chairman

Chairman of the Institution 23rd Convocation Ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof Biyi Daramola, has faulted the National Assembly’s move to stop the post University Matriculation Examination (UME) tests being conducted by universities before admitting students that sat for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) saying it is the result of the failure of the examining body. At a press conference to usher in the convocation programme of the institution in Akure, Daramola noted that JAMB has failed in its responsibility to conduct credible examination for students seeking admissions into the nation’s tertiary institutions, stressing that post UME tests became imperative because most students who passed JAMB failed to live up to expectations during post UME tests. The don however, said the Senate could regulate the amount of money being charged by the universities. He said: “Post UME examinations have come to stay in view of the fraud that had trailed JAMB examination in recent times. It is desirable and very important because many students who scored higher marks have failed to impress at post UME examinations. About 3,270 will take part in the convocation ceremony out of which 18 came out with first class honours. The institution will also give honourary awards to the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and former head of interim government, Chief Ernest Shonekan,” he said. During the week-long ceremony, various projects embarked upon by the institution will be commissioned. Sonekan, former Interim President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and Mimiko joined the 3,270 students of the university that received degrees and honours as the university celebrates its 23rd convocation ceremony, on Saturday 19 November, 2011. Given the breakdown of the graduands, Daramola, said 18 of the total graduating students made first class honours, while 1,826 students graduated with first degrees in their various fields. The university also graduated 351 diploma students, 663 postgraduate diplomas, 390 graduated with master degrees and 40 as Doctorate degree grandaunts.
