In Nigeria alone, 101,398 out of the 1,695,872 candidates that wrote the 2012 May/June West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination - WASSCE. Some of the results of the affected candidates will be cancelled. Some others that are investigated and noted to have been involved in malpractises will also be cancelled.
Apart from all the above punitive actions, some other possible strokes for any student found guilty of offense will be banned from taking the examination for a number of year. Not only that, if the school(s) that examination are conducted has any involvement in the act, they will also be sanctioned.
However, members of the committee expressed strong concerns over the increasing cases of examination malpractice and urged the states’ Ministries of Education to ensure that severe sanctions are imposed on all schools which perpetrate or condone the vice. It is not encouraging to see students clamouring for certificates instead of knowledge. The simple login behind the failure of students includes
* Illegible handwriting and spelling mistakes. Some students handwriting are like "writings of a rat."
* Poor command of English language.
* Incorrect interpretation of questions.
* Lack of mathematical /manipulative skills.
* Poor knowledge of examination techniques.
It is sadden to see results and certificates that cannot be defended by its owner.
