Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) Dashes Out 250 varsity scholarships In Akwa Ibom State

Report by From JOE EFFIONG and AMAOWO UDOFIA

Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) has allocated 250 out of its 500 tertiary education scholarships awarded yearly to students of Akwa Ibom State origin.
The scholarships which cover almost all fields of studies are for students studying within and outside Nigeria.

The Executive Director, Government and Public Affairs of the company, Mrs. Gloria Essien-Danner, who disclosed this during the opening ceremony of the 2012 AKS/NNPC/MPN science quiz competition for secondary schools in Akwa Ibom State at the weekend, said the oil company’s commitment to enhancing education through award of scholarships started 20 years ago and would be sustained.

Represented by an official of the company, Mr. Emmanuel Eti, Essien-Danner said the science quiz started at the local government elimination series and progressed to the state level.
She stated that the company in its attempt to support education had sponsored many children from communities in its host local government areas and enrolled them in private secondary schools in different parts of the state.
Addressing the participants, the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Mr. Nseabasi Akpan commended MPN for undertaking such corporate responsibility and facilitating the yearly quiz competition, with the aim of broadening the knowledge and sharpening science skills among students in the school system.
“We can see the enormous gains recorded since the inception of this important academic/brain sapping competition which has thrown a big challenge on students by placing a great demand on them. By this, students will be forced to cover the curriculum set by WAEC and NECO in the senior school certificate examination thereby promoting better performance,’’ he said.

Akpan who was represented by the permanent secretary in his ministry, commended the state government for laying a sound foundation through the free and fair compulsory education as well as the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) for organising the competition. He appealed to other corporate and multi-national organisations, groups and individuals to identify with the state government’s drive towards the provision of qualitative education.
The state Chairman, STAN, Mr. Udeme Udofia, in an address said a pre-competition item-writing workshop was held for selected teachers and subject specialists, who are certified national and international examiners, to raise standard questions. This was aimed at guaranteeing the credibility of the programme, arouse increased participation by students and teachers as well as assuring public acceptability.
