The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has concluded arrangements to conduct the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, in 137 centres spread across 17 towns in Kano, Borno and Yobe states, notwithstanding the activities of the fundamentalist Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, who said this in Abuja, yesterday, added that the Board would go ahead to conduct the examination, despite the threat of insecurity posed by the sect, and dismissed recent reports that the examination had been cancelled due to insecurity in the affected states.
Ojerinde described the report as “mischievous, unfortunate and unpatriotic”, saying he was misunderstood by those making insinuations that the examination had been cancelled.
He said: “It is unfortunate that we are experiencing this development (insecurity) in the North-East. I can assure you that the problem is isolated to primary schools.
“However, God forbids, if we have such problem in tertiary institutions, the board will be forced to take some remedial actions.
”With level of security concerns and efforts of government, such situation will not arise. We wonder where this alarming report that some centres have been cancelled is coming from.
“The management of JAMB hereby dissociates itself in its entirety from the false and alarming publications that it has approved the cancellation of some centres.
“This is false, impossible and unthinkable as it is not within the purview of Board’s mandate to cancel UTME examination in some centres without due authorization from the supervising authority.
“The information above is incorrect and unfortunate, this is against the backdrop of the fact that JAMB as a responsible Government Agency is guided at all times by rules, regulations and due process, hence, the Board can never take a rash decision as is being portrayed.”
