174,385 Candidates To Write WASSCE PDF Print E-mail
About 174,385 candidates, including both the hearing and the visually impaired, from 652 public and private second cycle schools nationwide, have been registered for this year’s May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Of the number, 95,169 are males and 79,216, females.They are expected to write the examination under 652 supervisors.

This marks an increase of 16.9 per cent over the 149,179 candidates from the 612 senior high schools, who wrote last year’s WASSCE. The practical segment of the examination has already started, and the practical in Home Management is slated for today, while the Oral English Language paper starts on Monday, April, 2, with the core written papers following.
The Principal Public Affairs Officer of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, disclosed this to the Times, on Friday. According to her, the Ashanti Region registered the highest number of 44,391 candidates (23,854 males and 20,537 females), while Upper West Region registered the lowest number of 3,537 (2,237 males and 1,300 females).
The figures for the other regions are as follow: Eastern – 27,015 (13,592 males and 13,423 females); Central-20,013 (10,620 males and 9,393 females); Greater Accra-19,146 (9,972 males and 9,174 females) and Volta-15,096 (8,540males and 6,945 females).
The rest are Brong-Ahafo-15,096 (8,540 males and 6,556 females); Western 12,834 (6,998 males and 5,836 females) Northern 12,077 (7,821 males and 4,256 females) and Upper East 4,569 (2,772 males and 1,796 females).
Mrs Teye-Cudjoe urged supervisors, invigilators and candidates to adhere strictly to the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the examination.
She assured the candidates that they could pass the examination without cheating “because the questions are based on the syllabi.” The May/June WASSCE is conducted for school candidates in all the member countries, namely Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia and The Gambia.
