There was growing tension and a stampede
in all the commercial banks around the premises of the University of
Abuja as intending students of the institution scrambled to get bank
drafts for the Post University Matriculation Examination (P-UME) oral
interview scheduled to hold from Monday, October 31st through Friday,
November 4th, 2011.
In a circular issued by the management
of the institution on Wednesday night, the 26th of October, 2011 and
signed by the Registrar, M.B. Modibbo, intending students were mandated
to secure bank drafts from the accredited banks within the federal
capital territory, Abuja. The circular reads: “This is to notify all
candidates who applied for admission into the
University of Abuja in the 2011 Unified
Tertiary Institutions Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by
Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) as a first or second
choice that a screening exercise will be conducted for candidates as
scheduled.Candidates are to come to the venue with a bank draft of N1,
000 (One Thousand Naira Only) payable to the
University of Abuja...” Some of the
intending students interviewed by LEADERSHIP WEEKEND expressed their
frustrations in trying to secure the bank draft.
