Prof. Chigozie Cyril Asiabaka Becomes FUTO 6th VICE-CHANCELLOR

GOVERNING COUNCIL APPOINTS ASIABAKA THE 6TH SUBSTANTIVE FUTO VICE-CHANCELLOR

Prof. Chigozie Cyril Asiabaka has been appointed the 6th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri by the Governing Council at its 133rd Meeting held on Thursday, May 19, 2011.

According to an offer of appointment to Prof. Asiabaka dated May 19, 2011 and signed by Engr. Vita Abba, Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of Council, the appointment is for a single term of five years and subject to the provisions of the University Statute, the Universities Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Act 2003 and the Federal Universities of Technology Act Cap F.23 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and any other relevant statute that may from time to time be made and or amended by the Federal Government of Nigeria. By this appointment, Prof. Asiabaka, the current Dean of the School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology will assume office as Vice-Chancellor on June 19, 2011 at the expiration of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. C.O. Onwuliri.

Born on September 29, 1953, Prof. Asiabaka who hails from Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State joined FUTO as a lecturer II on July 15, 1986 and rose to the esteemed rank of professor of Agricultural Extension on October 1, 1997. Prof. Asiabaka has held several administrative positions in the University. Between 1992 and 1994, he was the Co-ordinator, Research and Training of the Erosion Research Centre funded by the European Economic Community (EEC). He was also HOD, Agricultural Economics & and Extension from July 1992 – February 2000 and Director, Centre for Continuing Education (formerly FUTO Extension Services) 2004 – 2007. He has also served as the Chairman, Committee of Deans and as a Member representing the Senate in the 8th Governing Council from 2005 to 2007. Notable amongst the committees he has chaired is the Endowment Fund Committee (2002 – 2004) that facilitated the provision of 10 capital projects on campus.

Besides classroom work, Prof. Asiabaka has supervised 17 PhD theses, 7 MSc theses and over 100 undergraduate students in the Federal University of Technology, Owerri and Egerton University, Ngoro, Kenya. He has also served as an external examiner in over 12 universities across the country.

At the state, national and global levels, Prof. Asiabaka has served amongst others, as State Consultant, FADAMA III, Impact Assessment Studies, Imo State under the National Fadama (World Bank Assisted) Project; and Consultant and Impact Assessor for United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). He is currently a Senior Scientific Adviser to the International Foundation for Science (IFS) Stockholm, Sweden; the United Nations University, Tokyo, Japan and the Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Dakar, Senegal.

An active member of several learned societies, Prof. Asiabaka has to his credit more than 133 publications. He is married to Dr. (Mrs.) Ihuoma P. Asiabaka and they are blessed with children.
