Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ABTU) Joins 2011 ASUU STRIKE

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ABTU), Bauchi Chapter of ASUU on Monday joined the nationwide strike called by the union.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASUU's national body had earlier directed all members of the union to embark on a nationwide strike to press demands earlier requested by the body from the Federal Government.
The Acting Chairman, ATBU Chapter of ASUU, Malam Tijjani Garba, announced the commencement of the strike in Bauchi in an interview with NAN.
Garba said that "ABTU Chapter has joined the indefinite strike, due to failure on the part of the Federal Government to implement some of the agreements entered into between us and the Federal Government.
"The agreement was reached between us and the Federal Government in 2009 but the later failed to adhere to the terms and we are left with no other option but to embark on an indefinite strike.
"The strike has affected all the academic activities in the university, our students, resumed just two weeks ago and commenced registration but the exercise has been brought to a halt," he said.
Garba, who described the strike as unfortunate, said "we have concern for the students as it has disrupted their lectures but we cannot do otherwise since we want to produce quality graduates.
"The entire burning issue is that we only need funding based on UNESCO agreement that 26 per cent of the nation's budget shall be allocated to the education sub-sector but up to now, that I am talking we are still being allocated a single digit figure both current and recurrent budget.
"We shall continue to struggle until when it reaches a time where we will ensure that reasonable portion of the nation's budget is allocated to the education sub-sector which is for the benefit of the students and the nation," he said.
Some of the students who spoke to NAN expressed displeasure over the strike, saying that it was just coming when some of them who came from far away had just reported for academic activities.
They appealed to the lecturers and the Federal Government to enter into dialogue in the interest of the nation's education.
