Covenant University is a rescue mission in education”, the
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aize Obayan affirmed during an induction
programme organized by the University for its new faculty and staff
between November 18 and 19, 2011 at the African Leadership Development
Centre (ALDC).
The
Vice-Chancellor explained that the entrance of Covenant University into
educational sector speaks of translation and transformation. “Covenant
University is about raising skilful academics”, she said, adding that
the university is not a conventional institution; but in the business
of transforming lives. She urged the Faculty and Staff to be more
committed to capacity building and development.
She also affirmed that the Core Values give the university its uniqueness and distinction in the external context. “They are fundamental to the things we do and in our beliefs. These are the ways by which things should be done. Our core values are the defining components of beliefs, visions and missions”, she reiterated.
Professor Obayan urged the Faculty and Staff, to continue to be relevant, innovative and be contribution driven to achieve the goal of being a leading world class university.
She buttressed the need for positive action towards attaining a world class status, quoting the Chancellor, Dr. David Oyedepo, she said, “we must start thinking the unthinkable, daring the undarable and moving the immovable, if we must accomplish the impossible”.
Also speaking at the induction programme, the Registrar, Mr. Joseph N Taiwo, said the University, believes in the development of the individual which in the long run means the development of the institution. “Capacity building is not negotiable if we must remain relevant”, he said, adding that the University has various platforms for the capacity development of her Faculty and Staff.
He added that the university, recognizing that its employees are its most valuable resource, is fully committed to creating a working environment which is conducive to the welfare of all employees, and which enables them to realize their full potential.
He stated further that the University fully embraces its statutory duty to ensure the health, safety and welfare of its employees, so far as is reasonably practicable. Recognizing that this duty of care extends to mental well-being, the University is committed to ensuring that adequate provision is made to fulfill that responsibility in line with current best practice.
Other issues examined at the induction include: teaching quality; the pursuit of excellence at workplace; relating with students; on our way to world class status; discipline and “In-Loco-Parentis” role; the role of spirituality in driving excellence; examination procedure and processes; communication lines: response and plan and the place of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in building a world class university.
