Imo Assembly to abolish post-UME examination By Emeka Ibemere

IMO State House of Assembly is set to abolish the post-UME examinations in all the state’s tertiary institutions. To this end, the assembly has set up an ad-hoc committee to look into the issue.

Sam-Daddy Anyanwu is the chairman of the committee while Eudora Igwe, Ugonna Ozuruigbo, Simeon Iwunze, and Acho Ihim are members.  The assembly’s decision followed a motion by a member representing Okigwe State Constituency, Mr. Acho Ihim, calling for the abolition of post-JAMB examination (Post UME) in Imo State University and Imo State Polytechnic.

Ihim alleged that admission processes in the institutions are characterised by insincerity and corruption on the part of the authorities.

“We gained admissions into universities and polytechnic on merit. The process of gaining admission then was very sincere. But today, it has been bastardised and commercialised. School authorities are now interested in your money or your laps.  It is now a gold mine. Last year, Imo State University collected money from all students seeking admission from the Post-UME exams, yet there was no exam,” he said.

Supporting the motion, the Deputy Speaker, Donatus Ozoemena, said the motion was the best and that all the lawmakers must support it.
