Ojerinde said at the opening of the 5th National Conference of the School of General Studies, Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, on Thursday that the disparity and preferences were not limited to Nigeria.

He said that giving preferences for university graduates by some employers of labour was as old as the institutions themselves, but notwithstanding efforts were being made to de-emphasise the dichotomy.

A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Nuhu Yaqoub, in a presentation entitled ``Disparity between University and Polytechnic Education: A Question of Quality and Relevance'', said quality education at both levels in the country had been trivialised.

Yaqoub noted that many polytechnics in the country had deviated from the National Policy on Polytechnic Education that stipulated 70 per cent technical education and 30 per cent for arts and social sciences.

Earlier, the Rector of the polytechnic, Prof. Matthew Ajibero, had said that the annual event had facilitated the assemblage of intellectuals from far and near for the sharing of knowledge and enhancement of capacity.

Ajibero expressed delight that the event had turned the polytechnic into a veritable ground for harvesting and harnessing of ideas for the transformation of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event featured the launch of a journal by the General Studies Department of the institution and the presentation of awards of excellence to deserving Nigerians.
