Nnamdi Azikiwe University, an
institution whose philosophy is based on the propagation and
dissemination of knowledge without hindrance, and hinges Teaching and
Research on the needs of the immediate environment and Nigeria at large,
has been ranked the second most applied for, in the just concluded 2012
Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
According to the Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde,
this year’s UTME had a total number of 1,503,931 candidates who applied,
and records the highest number of candidates since the existence of the
UTME, with the University of Lagos ranking first as the most applied
for with 83,865 candidates, followed by our own University of all times,
UNIZIK coming very close with 82,148, while the University of Benin
follows suit with 80,048 candidates.
This feat must be clearly situated within the very intensive
efforts being made by the current leadership of the University led by an
erudite scholar and astute administrator Prof. Boniface Egboka, FAS.
All over the University development in infrastructure is going on at a
frenetic speed to meet the yearnings of staff and students.
It should be recalled that the mentioned, and very many not
mentioned Universities, had existed long before UNIZIK, and yet its
quick magical climb to the top. It is worthy of note too that the
Chairman of the Governing Council Chief Senas Ukpanah, OFR had once
stated that he hoped that UNIZIK would someday be ranked among the best
Universities in the world. It leaves a little to be thought of, that
Nnamdi Azikiwe University is actually moving towards that dream.
