44 inmates serving jail terms in three prisons in the country have been given admission to study degree programmes in the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) to enable them to be self reliant after regaining freedom.
The Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS), Mr. Olusola Ogundipe made this known yesterday in Port Harcourt while speaking at the commissioning of NOUN Special Study Centre at the Port Harcourt Prison.
He said the inmates who get admission are from the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison, Lagos, the Enugu Security Prison and the Port Harcourt Prison. He said in line with the transformation agenda of the Federal Government, the NPS has ensured that inmates receive necessary orientation in all facets of life.
Ogundipe stated that education remains oneof the focal areas of the NPS, adding that it is the conviction of the service that a well informed mind has greater propensity forself determination rather than taking to crime.
Also speaking, the NOUN's vice-chancellor, Professor Vincent Tenebe said the commissioning of the special centre in Port Harcourt Prisons brings to 48 the number of NOUN study centers across the country.
