90% Of 2011 Neco Candidates Failed English Lang.

MORE than 90 per cent of the candidates who sat for English Language in the Nov/Dec 2011 National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations failed.

This was disclosed yesterday by the Registrar and Chief Executive of the Council, Prof. Promise Nwanchukwu Okpala.
Less than 9.44 of the candidates had credit pass in English Language.

However, there was an improvement in the pass level of Mathematics which recorded 41 per cent credit as against the 17 per cent recorded in 2010.

There was a 50 per cent drop in the number of candidates’ enrolment as only 110,724 registered and 104,187 sat for the examination as against the 256,827 that registered with 235,933 sitting for the examination in 2010.

The analysis presented by the Registrar also showed that there were 22,680 cases of examination malpractices with Rivers State topping the list with 3,513 candidates (8.92%) while the FCT, Abuja recorded only 46 candidates (0.25%).

Mathematics had the highest percentage of malpractice associated with a single subject.

The Registrar disclosed that the drop in the number of candidates, who sat for the examination, was due to the checks and balances introduced by the Council to curtail examination malpractices.

"The council got a boost with the introduction of Biometric Data Capture Machines to combat impersonation during the examinations and it worked effectively. It discouraged the external candidates who were usually candidates who registered to remedy their result of any deficiency.

“The council would not be deterred by the low candidates’ enrolment to relax its checks and balances measures aimed at reducing examination malpractices. It is better to have few qualitative candidates who would be acceptable”.
